It has the look of a place where you might expect to find the undead. In fact, St. Mary’s Church in Whitby‘s atmosphere is so heavily drenched in creepiness then it inspired no less then the creator of one of the most iconic horror icons of all time, Bram Stoker and his vampire creation Count Dracula.

Lately, though the village of Whitby has a new problem caused by the church. It’s getting rid of the bones in it’s graveyard spits right into the backyards of Whitby’s residents.

St Mary’s dates back to 1110 AD,and it is said the cliff side church  inspired Bram Stoker. Stoker stayed in Whitby in the 1890s. St. Mary’s had been closed to the public since 1865, but the eerie backdrop was enough to fire Stoker’s imagination.

However, time and subsidence have meant that some of the longest supporters of St. Mary’s longevity, those in the Church’s bone yard, are escaping down into the village.

Perhaps they are off for a final round at the village pub?

Barry Brown went out and found his guests shortly after the subsidence began when examining his property:

“When the subsidence began I went out and found a few pieces of bone. They’d been buried for God knows how many years because they were soft and yellow from being in the soil.

‘I managed to identify one hip bone, two pieces of skull and a large bone that looked like it was part of a leg.

‘It’s quite sad picking that sort of thing up, I expect the people who buried them thought they’d be there for ever.”

However the residents in reality have more to worry about as they seriously begin to ponder if one day the church itself may come looking for it’s escaped dead and come sliding down the cliff towards Whitby itself.

A real true life horror story to be sure.
